Day 2 - 09/10/06

Breakfast was at the ballroom again.

got my fav american breakfast: scrambled eggs, ham, etc
but of cos, got cereals, vegs, kimchi, fruits... kimchi?

yah every single meal, surely got a big dish of kimchi there...

After breakfast is our 1st display rehearsal without our instruments. most of us havent touch our instrument for about 1 week since we packed and shipped it over a week b4 we fly to korea.

in this band, all of us knows when we're suppose to be serious when we're at work and when to play when it's the right time~! ^_^v

After the rehearsal, the wonju organizers arrange a day tour and brought us to visit the wonju town market.

It's like walking a town centre's shops and wet market.... got sell clothes, shops selling cosmetics like sasa...

In between there are some alleys which houses the wet market stalls.
Phot Courtesy from Song Wee

There's a lot of shops selling the same things... like so many shops selling their traditional dress...

some shops selling preserved food stuffs, some veggies n fruits stalls, there's even some shop that specialized in selling pig's head... i wonder what the korea buy n use it for? cook n eat? or they also got "ah-longs" there? hee~ watch too much "my wife is a gangster - korean movie"

got quite few handphone shops... i heard that their phone dun comes with interchangable sim card slots... the phones comes with built-in sim cards. so changing phones is quite troublesome..
Samsung is also known as Anycall there, LG is also known as Cyon

After spending 2hr+ exploring the town centre, we went to the tattoo stadium to get some of our instruments back to the hotel.
Due to the volume of instruments and offstage items that the bands brought with them, the storeroom couldnt accommodate all of it, so we decided to take some of it back to the resort.

There was a rehearsal going for the opening ceremony... so we stood n watch, some of us saw that 1 of the girls was holding a flag in the wrong way, it drew roars from those of us who noticed it. cos she was holding the flag of Singapore in the way direction.
so we told our translator 'kay'(that's her name in short) to inform the trainer for this item about the mistake.

i wondered how could the trainer overlook on this matter... but i dun really blame them, this is the first time singapore is taking part in this event. And how many times, during the period of our national day celebrations, u see houses, shops, hdb flats hanging the national flag, u see flags been hanged out in the wrong way too?

Anyway, most of us decided to take our instruments back to the resort, except euphoniums, tubas and percussion are left at the stadium.

while waiting for the percussionists to arrange their equipments, Benny took out his trumpet and played some warm-up. which attracted the attention of a cameraman. thru-out the wonju tattoo events, there are many teams of cameramen going around the various performing grounds to take snippets and ask us to crowd together and give our thoughts on the out experience of the tattoo, and we also had to shout out the wonju tattoo's chant: "WONJU TATTOO, FIGHTING~!" we found out later that "fighting" kind of means "Let's Go!" or "Jia You"...

after sorting our the store, we proceeded back to the resort and prepare our uniforms for the 1st show tml~

almost every night u can see a group of saf bands pple visiting the cyber cafe to check their mails and log on to msn messenger to chat with their frens n love ones. the charges was abt S$2.50/0.5hr... which was much cheaper then toking on the phone... a 3-5mins call on the public phone is about S$10....

Coming up next... Day 3 - street parade, opening ceremony~! ^_^V

Temperature: 14.5'C at 11:59pm, Wonju,Korea

Hi guys,

as promise i'll be blogging about the korea trip...
i took about 1600+ pictures on my camera,

i have selected some of the pictures and will present them to u all, in a pictorial daily recount of the Korea Trip.

it told me quite a bit of time to reduce the filesize of the pictures so that i can upload into blogger.
so i'll be doing as much as i can... but i'll be presenting the photos and summary of the trip in a day by day recall.

Day 1 - 07/10/06(Sat night), overnight flight to Korea, arrived in In'cheon Airport,Korea on 08/10/06(sun morning, 7+am). korea is 1hr ahead of singapore.

There wasn't enough seats on the original Asiana flight, 60 of us going, so 10 was re-allocated to take later SQ flight to n fro. so it MAJ Philip Tng, CPT Yusri and this 8 volunteered...

Since it was an overnight flight, we got to see the sunrise on the plane~ ^_^

The reason why we're in Wonju, Korea...

to attend the Wonju Tattoo 2006, International. (*tattoo = in simple terms a military band display) It's a festival lasting a week long, with various performance by bands all over the world. got outdoor performances, indoor concerts, and the main event of the tattoo is the daily evening marching bands display shows.

The Resort that all participating bands are staying... Hyundai Sungwoo Resort~

It's actually a ski resort in winter. this is the view of what's behind the hotel from my room's balcony. it's autumn in korea in october.

we change to our working clothes, had a lunch upon reaching the hotel before going to the tattoo stadium to unpack our cargo and recce the stadium.

in the background is the Wonju Tattoo Stadium. we're rather amused and amazed that they actually built a stadum just for a bi-annual event.

the following is a picture of the cartoon mascot of the SAF Bands. the mascot is dressed in our band's no.1 uniform and holding a bugle.
the tattoo committee got a cartoonist to draw cartoon mascots for all the participating bands. This is cartoon of the Official Mascot, Tattoori, the mascot of the Wonju Tattoo, tattoori was launched during this year's Wonju Tattoo.

And the 1st band we see after arriving korea(besides us lah~!),
is the R.O.K. Field Army Band...
and the following is their cartoon mascot.

other recce-ing the stadium, we proceed back to the resort.
took my bass bone back to warm-up and oil.
can't wait to play on it. cos we packed it into the cargo 1 week b4 we fly.

then it's buffet dinner at the Resort's ballroom for the participants...
so far saw the new zealander highland dancers rehearsing at the resort's auditorium.
and the rok field army band at the stadium...

Sin brought his frisbee to korea... so after resting for 1hr past dinner, a group of us met at the hotel lobby to go and play frisbee at the open carpark just in front of the resort's main block.

show you guys the resort's room. it's like an apartment. 6 of us room in 1 apartment. there's 1 master bedroom w/ toilet , 2 smaller rooms (1 more toilet beside the hall), 2 of us in 1 bedroom.

only the master bedroom got windows. the other 2 rooms only got 4 walls. the 2 small rooms has 2 thik mattresses on the floor, the M-bedrm got a queen size bed and a mattress on the flr. then cos it's autumn, the hotel shutted down the central air-con system for all the rooms. so quite a few of us pulled our mattress out to the hall and sleep beside the balcony's window. cos at night got cold air blowing in from there.

The Living Room

Master Bedroom

Toilet in Master Bedroom

Toilet in the Living Room

2nd Bedroom - shared by me n ronnie
(but i shiifted my mattress to sleep beside the balcony door n in front of the tv)

the temperature at night is average about 11'c at the resort... but got 1 night... it went down to 4'c.... SHIOK arh~!

3rd Bedroom - shared by khoo n simon.
(simon changed room with gilbert, so gilbert pulled the mattress to sleep in the hall too.)

ok la... this is roughly day 1.... stay tune to the other days......

bye~
